In Memory

Douglas Provines

Doug Provines passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 12, 2016 after a short illness.

Doug lived his entire life in Mill Valley, as a third generation Mill Valley native. His father, Bill Provines, was a historian who worked on the Mt. Tamalpais Railroad.

Most important to Doug was his family. He leaves behind his loving wife of 51 years, Kathy, and his three children, Judy Gum (Peter), Renee Campbell (Dean), and Rob Provines (Mary). His grandchildren, Christopher and Chloe Campbell, Nathan and Megan Gum and Penny Provines brought him the greatest joy.

For the last 20 years, he was thrilled to be a Grandpa and treasured the times he spent regularly babysitting. He also leaves behind his brother, Walter Provines, his sister, Ginny Johnson, and his brothersin- law, Ray and Pat Wille as well as many caring extended family members and friends. He always loved his alma mater, Marin Catholic High School, and attended every reunion since graduating in 1960.

Following his Marin Catholic graduation, he attended College of Marin and was proud to serve in the U.S. Army National Guard. He was asked to work for the US Postal Service and retired after a 31-year accomplished career.

Besides his family, Doug’s other great joy was traveling the world with Kathy. They explored every state and every continent.

Throughout the years, Doug enjoyed hosting many parties for extended family and friends with Kathy at their home.

In keeping with this tradition, Doug's family and friends celebrated his life at the family home after a funeral mass on October 1st, 2016  at St. Sebastian’s Church in Greenbrae.

Doug and I go back to about 4th grade when we worked at the church cleaning up after church activities (our moms made us do it)....we shared the same birthdate (he was 2 hours older)  we spend many hours discussing life etc as we grew older,   we did not hang out in high school but did celebrate our 21st birthday at the Top of the Mark.....we caught up with each other at the 50th reunion and laughed about our friendship as kids.  I feel like I am losing a brother.  I am so surprised at his passing.   I am praying for Kathy and his family I  know how sad this is for them.   He really loved his family and his life with them.   Rest in peace Doug, you were a great friend.

I remember Doug from St Raphael's in the third and fourth grade before I transferred to St. Anselms. He was, as I recall, what our moms would call a "cute little boy".

We reconnected at MC and he was always a nice, nice person. I will always connect him with his excitement over the reunions, his so glad to be there attitude and his love of life and family. The reunions will not feel the same. You will be missed. Love and comfort to your family.

Very sad to hear of Doug's passing.  My thoughts and prayers will be with him and his family.  I personally know very well what his family is experiencing after such a momentous loss. They need all the emotional support the can get.

Doug was a good friend in the early years. His Danish grandmother, Olga, was my nanny when I was young so I had a close connection with Doug throughout grammar and high school. His grandmother made great frenchtoast. Doug had a great family and I am sure, a wonderful life.

Doug & I have known each other since 1st grade.  He is standing on my left in the class photo.  We have always been friends.  We both worked for the Post Office.  I will miss him and his smile. RIP Doug.
